2014 Forest Hills Drive Album Cover
In 2009, Cole was signed as the first artist to Jay Z’s then fledgling label, Rocnation. As a result of the signing and his first-round draft pick status, the pressure and expectation to succeed has been immense throughout Cole’s career. On Tuesday December 9, J.Cole released his third studio album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive.

At every turn he has done it his way, in the process ignoring what many thought to be potential missteps, such as releasing his first album Cole World: The Sideline Story before the record’s single had really impacted. Even more ambitious was his decision to move the release date of his sophomore album up, in order to compete directly with Kanye West’s Yeezus. In both cases, his gambles paid off, with CW: TSS debuting at #1 on Billboard and moving far more units (218K) than anyone expected. Although it was outsold ever so slightly on opening week, the sophomore release, Born Sinner, quickly overtook the top spot and went on to sell more copies than the ambitious album by one of Cole’s rapper/producer heroes in Kanye West.
However, the release, rollout and promotion for his third album, 2014 Forest Hills Drive, is easily his most ambitious to date. Here's why:

The Announcement
While it was no secret that at some point a third album from J.Cole was looming, no one saw it coming this fast. The weekend of November 15-16, a number of odd items appeared on the internet.
First, an advertisement for 2014 Forest Hills Drive appeared on iTunes:
Followed by an Amazon listing, with the same title, and a date this time: December 9.
But what was probably the most interesting—and unexpected—hint was a photograph of a letter that was somehow leaked, showing Cole inviting neighbors to come by for a listening party on November 29-30 to the house on 2014 Forest Hills Drive, Fayetteville, North Carolina—a home that he had lived in as a child, and had now apparently repurchased:
Although the evidence now seems undeniably strong, people at the time were more skeptical. Even more supporting evidence popped up in other forms, including the actual listing and proof of sale in June of 2014 on popular real estate site Zillow.com.
Desired or not, the mythos of 2014 FHD had been created and was now working in Cole’s favor.
2014 Forest Hills Drive Tracklist
When the news of these separate instances began to hit social media, anticipation for one of the biggest names in rap dropping a surprise album before year’s end instantly reached a fever pitch.
The next day, it was confirmed with an announcement, cover art, and incredibly well done documentary style clip formally announced 2014 Forest Hills Drive:
No Single, No Songs, No Mixtape, No Freestyles
Ps2 emulator for pc windows 7 64 bit free download. As mentioned previously, a big part of Cole’s release was the anticipation, heightened even more so when it was announced that there would be no singles, no songs, and no videos put out before the projects actual release.
This idea made some think of Kanye’s Yeezus, which was released without any actual single or songs previously available for purchase. However, Kanye's appearance on Saturday Night Live a month prior..
..as well as his publicity stunt where he projected his face onto the sides of buildings all around the world and epic performance of new material at NYC’s Governors Ball gave fans a solid idea of the new and unique direction West was going.
Other than an early 2014 Mixtape by Cole and his crew—Revenge Of the Dreamers—and as well as a few guest appearances, the only song J.Cole had released was the Mike Brown tribute “Be Free,” so any indication of what the album would actually sound like just didn't exist.
He did, however, eventually unveil a simple clip for the album's opening track, 'Intro,” which was more mood setter than song.
It seems minute, but in a day and age where albums are often released with half the tracklist already revealed to the public, having truly no idea what a record will even sound like is a unique experience—especially in the hip-hop world.
Listening Sessions/Appearances
Artists hosting new album listening sessions for industry figures and tastemakers is a standard procedure within the music industry.

Cole flipped this concept on its head: Instead of schmoozing folks at some swanky studio in NYC or LA, Cole hit the road. In addition to the aforementioned listening session at his childhood home, Cole also appeared at random studios and high schools to personally play the album and meet with actual fans, throughout the United States as well as England, even sparing a few minutes to shoot some hoops.
But by far the listening session that truly stole the spotlight was in Dallas, Texas, when super fan @DaliaDk tweeted Cole asking him to come to her house to play the album.
To the shock of everyone, especially @DaliaDK herself, the two exchanged info and later Cole showed up to her house to do just that.
You really can’t buy this kind of PR, and it seems Cole is banking on that exact idea.
Press
Much like industry listening sessions, press interaction and interviews are typically an integral part of an album’s release. Other than doing one interview with his close friend and college roommate for the cover story of Complex magazine, Cole did ZERO press.
Instead, he hired well known LA Radio personality Rikki Martinez to be the “official Dreamville correspondent' (Dreamville being Cole's own record label), following Cole and co. around for the weeks leading up to the album's release, documenting it all along the way.
Fans could follow Rikki on Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat to keep up with the 2014 FHD lead-up. The only catch? Rikki was allowed to trail Cole to every meet and greet and listening, but Rikki herself wasn’t able to actually hear the album…. until Cole eventually caved in.
Misc. Social Media
Lately, it seems the best way to generate buzz via social media isn't so much through some incredibly deliberate, multi-leveled, plotted out, marketing approach—or, at least, not through some obviously deliberate, multi-leveled, plotted out marketing approach.
Instead, when a seemingly more organic approach is taken, events may more likely to take hold and gain traction online—and that's when things truly impact.
When news of the grand jury decision to not indict the police officer who killed Eric Garner was released, Cole took to the streets of New York City, shoulder to shoulder with other protesters. A picture of J.Cole marching with participants in NYC was taken and shared by twitter user @QuikWest. It quickly disseminated throughout the internet:
Although the social media publicity wasn’t Cole’s intent, it was just another nail hammered into listeners' conscious, that this artist—who has a song on the new album called “No Role Modelz'—seems to actually practice what he preaches.
One last, more lighthearted curtain call of social media glory came over this past weekend during his performance at radio station Power 106’s Cali Christmas. Cole took a few seconds to ask the audience a quick question:
The video quickly became an internet sensation, popping up on timelines and feeds all around the world. So: Are you still wondering whether or not having a presence online is necessary these days for artists? Just ask Bobby Shmurda…
2014 Forest Hills Drive is out now.
There was some speculation made earlier today that J. Cole would be releasing a new album before the year was out. Those predictions have been confirmed. Now available for pre-order on iTunes, 2014 Forest Hills Drive is officially slated for a December 9th release date, putting Cole head-to-head with Lil Wayne's Tha Carter V. No word yet on what music is going to be make the LP, but the iTunes order does confirm that the project will have thirteen tracks, so Cole fans should have a lot to look forward to.
In addition to providing the pre-order link via his official Twitter page, Cole also released a short documentary announcing the album's release and concept. The project will produce no pre-release singles.
